A South African Visitor Visa allows a foreign national to visit the country temporarily for tourism, to visit family or friends, or for certain short-term business and event-related activities. Depending on your nationality and passport, you may need to obtain a visa before traveling, or you may qualify for visa-exempt entry for up to 30 or 90 days.

If you are already in South Africa on a 90-day visitor endorsement and need more time, you may be able to apply for one extension of up to a further 90 days. The application must be lodged within the required period and supported by evidence of your intended stay, finances, accommodation and departure arrangements.

Do You Need a Visa to Visit South Africa?

Whether you must apply before traveling depends on the passport you hold, the purpose of your visit and the period you intend to stay.

• Visa-exempt travelers may normally receive a visitor endorsement at the port of entry for the period allowed for their nationality, typically 30 or 90 days.
• Visa-required travelers must obtain the appropriate visa before departure. South African Visitor Visas are not issued on arrival to travelers who require a visa in advance.
• The immigration officer at the port of entry determines the period actually granted. Check the entry stamp or visa endorsement before leaving the immigration counter.

Short-Term South Africa Visitor Visa

A short-term Visitor Visa is generally issued for a stay not exceeding 90 days. It may cover tourism, visiting relatives or friends, attending a conference, or certain limited business and event-related activities. The supporting documents must match the true purpose of the visit.

An ordinary Visitor Visa does not give you permission to take up employment, carry on a business, or undertake ongoing work in South Africa. Short-term work may require prior section 11(2) short-term work authorization, while longer employment requires an appropriate Work Visa.

South Africa Visitor Visa Requirements

The exact checklist depends on where you apply and why you are traveling. A short-term Visitor Visa application will generally require the following:

• A completed and signed application form.
• A valid passport with at least two unused visa pages and validity extending at least 30 days beyond the intended departure date.
• A clear statement explaining the purpose and proposed duration of the visit.
• A valid return or onward flight ticket, or proof of a reservation where accepted.
• Proof of sufficient funds for the visit, usually supported by recent bank-certified statements for the previous three months.
• Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking, lease, or invitation from the person providing accommodation.
• Supporting evidence for the stated purpose, such as an invitation letter, conference confirmation or family details.
• Passport photographs and proof of payment of the applicable fee.
• A yellow fever vaccination certificate where the travel history or route makes this applicable.

A South African mission, visa center or the Department of Home Affairs may request further evidence. Requirements and submission procedures can also differ between countries, so the relevant mission’s current checklist should be confirmed before submission.

Visitor’s Visa under Section 11(6)

A section 11(6) endorsement is a visitor’s visa issued only to the spouse or life partner of a South African citizen or permanent resident. Unlike an ordinary Visitor Visa, it can be endorsed to allow the holder to work, study or conduct business in South Africa.

It does not extend to other relatives such as siblings or parents, and a change to a different visa category must generally be applied for outside South Africa. Holders may become eligible for permanent residence once the relationship has been established for the required period. Extending a Visitor Visa in South Africa

A traveler admitted for up to 90 days may usually apply in South Africa for one extension of the same visit, up to a further 90 days. Approval is not automatic. The Department of Home Affairs considers the reason for the extended stay, the supporting evidence, compliance with the existing visa and the applicant’s ability to support themselves until departure.

An extension continues the existing purpose of the visit. It does not convert a tourist stay into permission to work, study long term, volunteer or operate a business.

When Should You Apply for a Visitor Visa Extension?

For a standard 90-day visitor stay, the application must be submitted in person no less than 60 days before the current visa or entry endorsement expires. In practical terms, you should start preparing shortly after arrival and secure the VFS appointment within the first 30 days of the stay.

Where a visa was issued for fewer than 30 days, the regulations provide a shorter deadline of no later than seven working days before expiry. Short-stay cases should be assessed immediately because there may be very little time to prepare and obtain an appointment.

Visitor Visa Extension Requirements

A Visitor Visa extension application normally includes:

• The completed online application and VFS appointment confirmation.
• The applicant’s original passport and copies of the passport information page, current visa and entry stamp.
• A passport that remains valid for at least 30 days after the proposed final departure date and has at least two unused pages.
• A detailed motivation explaining why more time is required and confirming the intended date of departure.
• Proof of accommodation for the extended period.
• A valid return or onward flight booking consistent with the requested extension.
• Recent proof of sufficient financial means, normally including bank-certified statements for the previous three months.
• Two recent passport photographs and proof of payment of the required DHA and VFS fees.
• Any additional documents relevant to the applicant’s circumstances, travel history or host in South Africa.

How the Visitor Visa Extension Process Works

1. Check eligibility and dates. Review the passport, entry stamp, current visa conditions, and intended departure date.
2. Prepare the supporting documents. Gather the financial evidence, accommodation, flight booking, and reason for the extension.
3. Complete the online application. The details must be consistent with the passport and supporting documents.
4. Pay the prescribed charges and book VFS. Select the correct application category and an available Visa Application Centre.
5. Attend the VFS appointment. The applicant submits in person and completes the required biometric process. Visa Immigration SA does not attend the VFS appointment with the applicant.
6. Retain the submission receipt and await the outcome. The Department of Home Affairs, not VFS, decides whether the application is approved.

Can You Stay in South Africa While the Extension Is Pending?

A person who has properly lodged an in-country extension application may remain in South Africa while the Department of Home Affairs considers the application. Keep the VFS submission receipt and a copy of the application as proof that the matter is pending.

You should not leave South Africa while the application is pending. If the original visitor period expires before a decision is issued, departing without an approved extension can lead to overstay consequences at the port of exit. A pending application is also not a travel document and does not guarantee re-entry.

What Happens If the Visitor Visa Expires?

Remaining in South Africa after the authorised stay without a properly lodged pending application can result in an overstay. A person may be declared undesirable and prevented from returning to South Africa for a period determined by the length and history of the overstay.

Do not wait until the final days of the visa to seek assistance. If the visa has already expired, or if an extension has been refused, obtain advice immediately about the available departure, review or appeal process and the deadline stated in the decision.

Can You Change from a Visitor Visa to Another Visa in South Africa?

As a general rule, a Visitor Visa holder cannot change to a different visa category from within South Africa and must apply through a South African mission in their country of citizenship or ordinary residence. Limited exceptions apply in specific circumstances, including certain qualifying spouses and dependent children.

Because the correct place of application depends on the applicant’s current status, relationship, proposed activity and visa conditions, obtain an assessment before relying on an exception or making travel arrangements.

When a Different South African Visa Is Required

A standard Visitor Visa is not suitable for every temporary stay. A different category may be required if you intend to:

• work for a South African employer or perform ongoing employment activities;
• undertake short-term work requiring section 11(2) authorisation;
• study for a period or course requiring a Study Visa;
• perform unpaid work for a qualifying organisation under a Volunteer Visa;
• receive medical treatment requiring a Medical Treatment Visa; or
• live in South Africa as the spouse, life partner or relative of a citizen, permanent resident or temporary visa holder.

The purpose stated in the application must match the activity you will actually undertake in South Africa. Using the wrong category may lead to refusal or immigration difficulties later.
